Gardening

In keeping with the Quaker commitment to environmental stewardship, Princeton Friends aims to instill in students an awareness of our connectedness to the natural world and a sense of responsibility for its well-being. The third grade Gardening class is the cornerstone of our environmental education, designed to nurture, among many goals, an appreciation of the cycle of life, from seed to plant, compost to seed; practical applications of skills such as how to test and prepare soil, plant, tend, and harvest plants; and the fostering of wonder and confidence that is a natural result of experiential, hands-on learning, and using one’s own five senses to know the world. Drawing on the expertise of our Environmental Educator, students also make interdisciplinary connections between gardening and math, science, Central Study, literature, and writing.
